Single Serve Coffee Makers Can Do More Than Just K Cups

!±8± Single Serve Coffee Makers Can Do More Than Just K Cups

Not long after our new single serve coffee maker arrived we started brewing up a storm. For the first time ever, my wife and I could just grab whatever flavor we fancied and brew it up in short order. We cleared out the old coffee maker and tried to pack our collection of Green Mountain k cups into the cupboards in some semblance of order. It soon became obvious to us that this was not a very workable solution. We ended up buying a carousel to hold the k cups, a perfect solution for anyone who likes to have a variety of coffees, teas or even cocoa at hand.

Then we got to thinking about other possibly useful accessories for our new single serve coffee maker. We had a pound or two of ground coffee still in the cupboards, a bag of whole beans in the pantry and another in the freezer. We couldn't just throw all of it away! It got us wondering if there was some way we could use all of our remaining coffee with the Keurig. I noticed that one of the most common items sold with the model we bought was the Keurig K Cup reusable coffee filter. This is an obvious, and ingenious necessity for anyone with a single serve brewer. It holds a couple of tablespoons of coffee, and really is pretty easy to take apart and clean. Definitely more hassle than the K Cup, but we feel better that we aren't wasting any of our coffee. One minor issue is that there is a bit of splashing where the coffee comes out the bottom, but it's not too big a deal.

So in a short couple of weeks, we managed to completely change the way we brew coffee and learn about a few accessories as well.

Coffee - Instant Or Ground

!±8± Coffee - Instant Or Ground

When I wake up in the morning I want my coffee. I do not have an automatic coffee maker so I used to resort to instant coffee for my first dose of caffeine. Then as I drink my instant coffee, I make a pot of ground java.

Instant java is a brew that has already been made. But instead of drinking it, the brew is freeze dried. Freeze drying is nothing more than putting the brew in a chamber, and lowering the temperature and pressure. When the temperature is below freezing, and pressure is less than atmospheric, heat is applied to remove the moisture from the brew. Now you have freeze dried crystals. Add boiling water and you have instant java.

But I like ground coffee the best, much better flavor. I used to make my ground coffee by using a French Press. A French Press is where you put the coffee grounds in a pot, pour boiling water in and then use a press to force the coffee grounds to the bottom of the pot. As you force the coffee grounds down, the water, which has absorbed the coffee, is separated from the coffee grounds and is forced to the top of the press. Therefore the coffee grounds and coffee brew are separated, allowing you to pour the coffee out without the grounds.

Since I found the French Press, I found it takes about the same amount of time to make coffee this way as it does to make an instant brew. I have given up on instant and now just have fresh brewed using the French Press.
